I had the Chile Verde, really delicious, served on a platter & could have served two. The margarita was also really good! Lauren was our server, very friendly & attentive.

We've always enjoyed the Hombres just fine but after further discussion it's really not worth the money you spend. The drinks are okay and the food just alright. The service (Derek) was horrible. Overall not worth the cost at $15.99 for a burrito that I could have spent $8 for at the cafe rio and had a better meal and experience. I'd say save your money and go to the red iguana or somewhere better!!!

Having had many lunches here, I find Tres Hombres to be an above average Mexican restaurant. Come with an empty stomach because the portions are very large. I appreciate that they throw in the complimentary warm chips and very good salsa, which is becoming less and less common at Mexican restaurants these days. The service is very nice and the food is served promptly. Great for a short lunch.

This is the worst Mexican restaurant. Super pricey for the food quality. The only thing worth mention are the chips and the fried ice cream, other than that the food is gross. The restaurant does not look clean nor do the silverwear. It was a great waste of my money and time. I'm never going back to that horrible place.

Decent flavors in the burritos with shredded steak and chicken that I've tried. Standard issue beans/cheese and rice - nothing I haven't tasted at any other Mexican restaurant. Chips and salas are good. The 2 stars come from just OK food and the prices. It does have a nice ambiance, however, this is not enough to make up for the average food at mid-teen dollar prices. Too expensive!

I am a big fan of Tres Hombres for the simple fact that they understand atmosphere. The inside is heavily decorated with plant life and you feel like you're in a cantina in Mexico. In fact, a couple times they've had live Mariachis! The food is pretty good too. I'm still waiting for the Mexican restaurant in utah to hit on all cylinders with food and atmosphere, and this is probably the closest. Good food, great atmosphere, enjoy!

Not The best first experience. First, I arrived at the same time as another group the hostess looked at me and asked how many, I let her know I had a reservation, after I answered she got annoyed then asked the other group, sat them first, which is fine. The waitress was nice while waiting for the rest of my group, service was good and on top of our needs. Food was good..average Mexican food experience. Once we got our bills paid we sat chatting for a while to catch up, you know because there isn't a lot of talking while you eat, then after a while we were kicked out by the manager, I'm assuming. He said that the table we were sitting at was reserved & needed us to leave. Then stood nearby staring at our group... Seriously? After paying $100+ for our meals and were getting kicked out?! First & Probably the last time I will go here. Thanks for cutting my time I paid you, to catch up with my friends... To announce to them know I am pregnant. Classy.

The food was absolutely horrible. Bland and everything tasted the same. Think school cafeteria. The super premium margaritas were watery and tasteless.

Never been super impressed with this place. The decor inside is kinda nice I guess since they have expanded over the years. The food is kinda bland and over priced. I do like that they have a guy go around with a guitar usually on weekends, but he does get pushy for you to buy his album. It's like, really, do I want to buy an album of some struggling Spanish guitarist?

Americanized Mexican. Good chips, mild salsa. Big plates. Pricey for the quality.

I going to make an assumption here that the owners knew exactly what they were doing in picking the location, creating the atmosphere, nice lighting and ample parking, some smart decisions were made in creating this place. Where it all falls apart is the moment you're seated which speaks directly to management. Lousy service, going through the motions effort by staff and the portion size is generous, but the taste is just lacking. A few hints to the management, first resign, you're not cut out for managing a restaurant effectively. Next, if you decide to stay, train your greeter on doing more than just waking me to my table and laying down menus. Make sure the table is clean and has place settings, and try and communicate. Is a wait person going to see me soon, a busboy, a mariachi band? Tell me something. Train your wait staff to speak in more than a hushed tone. Offer some suggestions from the menu. And, when the complimentary nachos/salsa bowls and my beverage glass are empty, don't wait for me to ask for more. Pushing those items to the edge of the table weren't hints enough? The food wasn't all that bad, but there was nothing that stood out and made me want to come back. There may be some items on the menu that Tres Hombres specializes in, possibly the boxed in items which I ordered, no dice on quality, but the wait staff should maybe try and help the customers in ordering. Oh, and that lousy tip we left, your waiter earned it. And, I really wanted to take the tip back as he stared us down as we left the restaurant. Mi amigo, really, were you planning on us drawing pistols if I had stiffed you? Smart ownership being undone by its management staff, it's a shame because this place could be so much more than it is currently.

Ambiance, location, decor: 4 stars. But it goes down hill from there. First of all, it's a little spendy for Mexi food. The "specials" are $9.99 and most meals are $14.99 and up. The chips were very good, but they only give one complimentary bowl, which is fine,as it keeps the grazers away... totally understandale and the $0.99 charge for additional chips is reasonable. Their salsa has a nice tomato flavor, but has absolutely NO HEAT! Tres Hombres has a pretty good scam going. Step 1: Serve bland, flavorless food with no spice or heat whatsoever. Step 2: Give a tiny portion of "complimentary" salsa and Charge $0.99 for additional salsa to actually give the food some flavor. Step 3: Charge another $0.99 for a tiny side order of jalapenos, which are required to give the food some heat. As I said, I completely understand charging extra for chips. But charging for condiments?!?! UNcool and UNcalled for. You can get roughly the same food, directly across the street, for roughly half the price (although I wouldn't recommend that place, either). PLUS the other place will give you condiments if you need them... at no charge! Tres Hombres would get one star, but they moved up to two stars for the setting and the $2 bloody mary, which was atually very spicy, flavorful and yummy. I will not be going back to Tres Hombres.

Let me preface this with: I grew up in California. The Mexican food in CA is different than the Mexican food in Utah. That being said, Tres Hombres comes as close to any California Mexican resto I've eaten at in Utah. The atmosphere is a lot of fun, with plants everywhere and a wooden parrot or two thrown in to give it some tropical feel. If you're tall like me (6'3"), you'll have to duck under the chilis they have hanging down in front of the tables on the side, otherwise, you WILL get smacked in the face by a bunch of chilis. The service is great here. The staff has always been super nice with us and prompt. Even on a recent busy night, with our waitress literally running between the kitchen and her tables, she still stopped by to refill our drinks and ask how things were going. My wife and I love the free chips and salsa. The salsa is our absolute favorite. Some days it has kick, some days it doesn't. Either way, it tastes fresh and delicious. I do wish the chips and salsa were bottomless, but that's a minor complaint. The entrees themselves are ginormous! You may think looking at the price that it might be a pricey place to eat, but you really do get a LOT of food for your buck here. My wife loves the chimichanga and I always get the carne asada burrito. Que delicia! I can't speak for the bar, as our only interaction with them involved a virgin pina colada This is a great place to take your family, or even just a date for a fun place to go. It's loud, but not ridiculously so. The wait staff is prompt and courteous and the food is great. You can't go wrong! Just don't let yourself oink down the free chips ;)

This is the first one star review I've had the write since joining the ranks of the Yelp community! It pains me to do it for such a memorable place to me. I have fond memories of Tres Hombres from close to 20 years ago when I used to visit Salt Lake. Once I moved here I used to frequent from time to time, and always loved it. Now, it has been a few years since I've been so I was excited to go when I was with a couple of friends who decided it was the place for lunch today. Now my fellow Yelpers, and to any and all who read this review, please heed my words! It is wise to do your homework prior to going to a new (or new to you) restaurant. ...and since it had been years I should've read up on Tres Hombres to see what I was in for! The decor in Tres Hombres is amazing, I mean it's top notch! However that's where it stops. The chips are ok, the salsa is watery tomato paste at best, the food is over priced (especially for the size and bland flavor) and the service (all the way to the manager sending messages through the server) is shotty at best. So like I mentioned I went with a couple friends. They ordered salads, and I ordered Tacos de Calle ( I LOVE street tacos) on the servers recommendation. We snacked on the chips, and the watery tomato paste and awaited our food. The busser frequently stopped by to fill our waters which was a plus. After about 15 minutes the server brings out the two salads and said, "I had to get these out of the window, they were dieing! Oh and sir your tacos will be out soon, steak takes longer to make then salads." ...REALLY, are you sure??? Ok so the cheese was melted, the lettuce was wilted, and the plates were hot to the touch. One of my party asked for green tomatillo sauce rather than the salad dressing, and the server, seemingly put out, said, "Ok hold on. Five minutes later, and another visit from the water boy our server returned with the requested sauce. Still no Taco's de Calle. She said, "Oh your food will be right out. We're a little busy." Ok now I've been in the restaurant industry for years, and know better than to believe that load of crap! She obviously forgot to put in the order. So finally my tacos show up. They were bland, tasteless, and not a whole lot to it, and I was about to pay $9.99 for this? So I made up my taco and realized there was no salsa on the table, and since our server was scarce at best I figured I'd use a little of the tomatillo sauce form my friend. It was what those taco's needed. So when I finally caught a glimpse of our server I asked for a small side of the sauce for myself. The server came out with a small bowl and said, "My manager told me to tell you, we have to charge for tomatillo sauce in that size. But I'm not going to charge you today." I told her I just asked for a small size but if she had to charge go ahead, it was fine. She said, "No I won't charge you today." So we went on to eat our bland, wilted, and over priced food. With no check back from the server. Finally she came over and cleared a few items from the table and dropped the check. When glancing at the check we realized all the up charges on the bill. $1.49 for all the sides of tomatillo, and $2.49 for some extra black beans my friend asked for because there were too few on the salad. When we asked the server about the charges, she snarled, and said, "You can talk to the manager." Now like mentioned I have been in the restaurant industry for a majority of my professional career. I managed a very popular, and high revenue generating restaurant in the South Towne area. So I am aware of the need for up charging, and food cost, blah blah blah... However when this manager came out he was ready for war. I mean he didn't even take a second to hear a word we had to say. He immediately defended his up charge, and stance. I calmly told him what the server said and he started to calm down. Then went right back to it when one of the people in my party said we probably won't be back. He went on to tell us he had no reason to hear us out, or help us because we weren't coming back anyway. I was appalled! I had never treated a guest that way ever! Let me end with this. If you at all value your time, money, or experiences, do not go to Tres Hombres! there are SO many GREAT Mexican restaurants in Salt Lake. Please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and go down the street! Literally go north, south, east, or west and there is a better Mexican restaurant than Tres Hombres less than minutes away! I apologize to those that love Tres Hombres, although I have not read too many stellar reviews. However if you love Tres Hombres, please do yourself a favor and branch out, there's a lot better out there! P.S. I'll be the guy down the street enjoying a different Mexican restaurant, sipping a Dos XX wearing my Yelp shades! I don't always drink beer but when I do I drink Dos XX. ...and I don't always eat mexican food but when I do it won't be at Tres Hombres!

This is just sad. Remember going with friends to Tres Hombres in the 1980s and drinking huge margaritas and eating great chili verde? And knowing your waitress and tipping her well because the service was so good? NOT ANYMORE. The hostess is non existent. The waiter is slow and unfriendly. But the worst part is the food. It tastes Terrible. And everything you order looks and tastes like everything else. Time to say goodbye to an old friend. We went three times just to make sure. Time to stop this sad excuse for a restaurant.

Why aren't there more reviews for this place???? Seems like it's been around forEVER! This is what a Mexican restaurant in the US should be like. Inside it looks like a jungle curiously encased in a cathedral. Don't bother looking too closely at the plants above your head because just as I was beginning to wonder how they are able to water them, I realized that they are all plastic. Oh well, still looks fun as all get-out if you are busy eating all the chips and salsa! The margs are huge and they aren't stingy with the goods in that respect. I only needed one before I forgot all about studying the plastic plants! The food was fine. Prepared just the way we all ordered it. No problems at all, and they portions are HUGE. Service was exceptional.

if you're a fan of quantity over quality, i highly recommend tres hombres. however, for those of you seeking traditional mexican fare and portions you can finish in one meal and not feel bad about yourself for, i suggest you keep looking. the prices are a bit high, but to be fair, the portion are ENORMOUS. as in, each plate could easily be shared by 3 people with food to spare. not particularly the freshest mex i've ever tasted, nor the most flavorful, but not awful. if you're with a large group and have a lot of mouths to feed, this might be the right place for you. service is fine, and the restaurant is clean and kitschy - nothing horribly wrong, but nothing all too great either.

My girlfriend and I just tried Tres Hombres for the first time, we've been meaning to go for a long time and finally did. We thought the service was excellent and we received our food very fast for how busy the restaurant was. We'd rate it 4-5 stars for that part of our experience. Then came the food, we found it to be somewhat bland and fairly average. Large portions (we both had to get a to go container), but after a few bites we both looked at each other and was a little disappointed. We would go there again and probably will but, it just wasn't that place that hooks you forever!

I went there for lunch, upon arriving there I was pretty impressed with the way place look; homely and felt like I was in Mexico. The waitress gave us complimentary chips that were warm and salsa which wasn't spicy. From the lunch menu, #15, I ordered Taco and Enchilada Combo: Choice of chicken, ground or shredded beef taco and one enchilada. 8.99. Lets just say, I had better Mexican food before. I wouldn't come back unless I was dragged there.

My favorite Mexican place in Utah. I guess it's mostly the margaritas but I like the mixture of fish and seafood they have added with the traditional items. Not the most authentic Mexican food (that would be the Red Iguana) but a fun and delicious place on the east bench.

Tres Hombres is a great lunch destination. It has a really good lunch menu and the service is very prompt. They charge you for extra chips - $0.99 will appear on your ticket. They have a very nice swordfish dish on the menu - its a must try.

If you like low heat, mellow Ca-Mexican food, then this is the place. The portions are enormous and they nicely accepted our BOGO entree coupon which made the prices okay. The margarita was the best part of the meal and the Tres Leches is pretty good. But if you like any heat in your chiles, sauces or salsa, this is not your place.

The atmosphere is nice and the restaurant itself is spacious, but the food was average. Service was nice and we were seated right away. The bar set up seems nice. I'd maybe only go here for like a happy hour for chips and salsa and drinks. Make sure to ask for the roasted salsa if you want a kick!

Who knew Mexican food could taste so awful. The food was over priced, dried, bland and did I mention bland... If it was up to me I was gonna skip out from eating here, just by all the negative reviews. Unfortunately, my friend insisted on us eating here. The biggest mistake I made... When a Yelper tells you it's bad, I highly recommend you heed to their review. ;) I would have done better going to a Mexican street vendor and enjoying an amazing taco for a $1.50!

Staff was great, food was not. Relleno was inedible...no joke... and I can choke down about anything, cheese in the enchiladas wasn't melted and the chips tasted like the fryer grease needed to be changed. If I'm forced to go again I'll try the carnitas I guess.

It's hard to go wrong with Mexican food - rice, beans, cheese, tortillas, sauce, and various bits and pieces all combined to make something delicious. It's also hard to justify paying more than $10 for a good Mexican dish. Tres Hombres seems a bit on the pricey side for what you're getting. Yes, the food is good and plentiful, but it's not $15 - $20 per entree good and plentiful. During my most recent visit, the food was delicious, as usual. The service was great, as usual. And the ambiance was fun and pleasant. When it comes to Mexican restaurants, the ambiance at Tres Hombres can't be beat. However, the booth seating has got to be some of the most uncomfortable seating I've ever endured. After enjoying a delicious meal, it took a good five minutes to pry myself out of the booth, crack my joints, and return to an upright position. Bottom line... good food, good service, great atmosphere, terribly uncomfortable seating, and a bit overpriced. I'm not opposed to returning, but it won't be a regular thing.

It's 7PM, Tuesday night, still have work to do at home but need to eat out. Ok what's close? Kathmandu (takes too long), Crown Burger (unhealthy but good), Cafe Rio (too far up 33rd), well there's always Tres Hombres because they have good chips and salsa. But I know they're just a hook, a way to trick people to eat there. Same goes for the ambiance--tropical, cool, clean. Every single time I eat at Tres Hombres, I tell myself I'll never go back (happens once a year). It is 8:20am next morning and my stomach still hurts. I don't know what they put in their food but it always tastes off. Fajitas were not served on steaming dish which was a disappointment. Prices are way too high. Alberto's food is much better and more authentic. I wish Tres Hombres had food that matches their great location and pretty cool interior setting. It's greasy, unhealthy, low quality ingredients, in no way shape or form, do it's positive aspects justice. Don't let the chips and salsa trick you.

Horrible experience. I've eaten here several times and it's ok food. The service was absolutely horrible. It took 55 minutes for my margarita. And when I got it, it was horrible watered down. And it was supposed to be there best top shelf!! I will not be coming back ever... Kinda sad. I hate leaving bad reviews.

So I've always wanted to try this place because I drive by it a bunch. The staff is mostly Caucasian except for the bus boys and probably kitchen staff.. Pretty discouraged. I guess they think attractive white females will bring white business. Idk. Everything was a couple bucks more than most restaurants but that's not the bad thing. I thought I would be eating dinner along except I was joined by an "hombre"... No not the owner, his name was Raul and he was a cockroach..... Yes that's right folks a cockroach!!!!!!!!! I then stopped eating and inspected my food asked for the check and she killed the cockroach with a napkin.... I managed to snap a pic of Raul while he was climbing on my glass except in the pic he had already crawled off..... They compensated me by covering my $5 dollar guac... Obviously I won't be back and neither should you.

We came here on a weekday night for little family get together. We were seated right away and were given more than enough chips and salsa to hold is over before we got our entrees (which took more time than I expected on a quieter Wednesday night). I really like their chips! We got our entrees and I was surprised that they were spicier than I expected, which I certainly don't mind though my grandma wasn't able to finish hers because of it. I got the mole enchiladas and did like them, though in comparison to Red Iguana's authentic mole, they don't even compare. Service was prompt, keeping our glasses full, but our waitress was very awkward and hard to understand. I guess it's a good thing that we were pretty low maintenance! While I do have my favorite Mexican restaurants in town, I did like this place and felt it was up to par- a standard mexican restaurant you could probably find in any town. However, for the prices we felt we would rather go to other places that have more flavor and authenticity. But if you're looking for a good classic Mexican restaurant, you've found it!

Oh my! What a strange hodgepodge of reviews given by my fellow Yelpers on this Mexican restaurant . I was in the mood for Mexican food and I used Yelp only for the address and directions. I did not check any of the reviews prior to my going. I went mainly because it was fairly close to my home. No other reason. I didn't look at any of the reviews on Yelp until after I had finished eating. I never want to step on the toes of my fellow Yelpers as everybody has a right to their own opinion and their own experience. Here is mine, unvarnished and unbiased. I liked it. I like the decor. It was a little different, sort of part industrial space part indoor Mexican garden, part sports bar. The people who work there seemed to be excited that I came. I asked for a table in a certain location and they had to move some chairs to make room for me but that was not a problem. I totally agree with some of the other reviews. The chips were light and fresh and crispy and tasty. The salsa did have a nice tomato flavor, but really was devoid of any spice whatsoever. It really could use a little kick. I was in the mood for a margarita. I was not disappointed because there was a decent amount of tequila in my drink, and overall the quality was good. No doubt I make a better margarita in my own blender but I don't expect everybody to be able to be the artist that I am. I have mentioned before that being from Los Angeles, more specifically being raised on the Mexican food joints up and down East First Street by my grandmother who lived in El Sereno.... I tend to be a bit of a Mexican food snob. So I will say that the food at Tres Hombres was not the most outstanding Mexican cuisine I have ever enjoyed. But it was pretty good. I had a standard combo plate with cheese enchiladas and an excellent chicken taco. There were plenty off frijoles and rice. The price of the entree might have been a little more than I have seen in other restaurants of this type, but the quality was definitely there. Good flavors. Good spice. Well made and cooked the way I like it. I see where some of my fellow Yelpers have complained about having to pay extra to get more chips and more salsa. If this was the case, and I have no reason to doubt that this was the case at one time, that would have been wrong. I had no problem at all asking for more of each and it was brought to me with no questions no charges. My waiter was very good. A friendly guy from the time I sat down until the time I paid the check and walked out the door. He made sure my drink was refreshed and only asked once how things were going. He was on top of things, without hovering. That seems to be a lost art in most restaurants these days. Was it the best Mexican food I've ever had? No. Was it worthy of the better places in my old hometown? No, not quite. But it was good. I liked it. I'm sure I will be back. Not every place in Salt Lake City can be as good as the Red iguana. But Tres Hombres is just fine.

Tried this place out for the first time tonight. Food was okay, I ordered a chile verde burrito platter. 15$!!!!! Rice and beans seemed cheap/out of a can... Chile verde was very Americanized but had a decent amount of pork in it. It was also very spicy. You can find much more authentic Mexican food for half the price around the area. Not going to eat here again.

I don't get what all the bad reviews are about. My husband and I had a great experience at this restaurant! The service was great, restaurant was clean and maintained, the food was really good and we had a nice evening. The horchata was yummy, the salsa and chips were awesome and the chimichanga and enchiladas on point. The enchiladas had a name I can't remember how to spell. They had a tomatillo sauce, queso fresco and Mexican sour cream on them with choice of meat. I had the sweet pork which I personally thought was pretty good considering all the one star reviews. It was just the right amount of sweet, not to sloppy or dry and had a nice overall flavor. It was a great compliment to the fresh avocado slices and the bright cheese. I'd get them again for sure. And the refried beans actually had flavor and the Spanish rice was nice and spanish-y. Keep in mind this is Utah and everything is dumbed down and Americanized. So I graded this based on FOOD. Not authenticity. That's just ridiculous for the area. It is a tad overpriced - you do get huge portions, however id rather have 25% less food and 25% less cost. That's the only change I would make and I will be back again soon.

Update Time. More like 3 1/2 stars. So now that I know what to order, it is better. The shrimp flautas are the best thing you are going to put in your mouth! Fish tacos a la carte are delicious too. Margaritas are solid. They have Victoria on draft. Chips and salsa are good too. Not a fan of rice and beans, seems old. Prices are high hence the a la carte option. Service is hit and miss for how many times I have been there, you would think servers would be more on top of it. Manager Blaume (misspelled?) is an awesome guy and will do anything to make your dining experience better.

Why oh why do we keep coming back to Tres Hombres? - Decent food - not authentic but not un-authentic either. Huge portions. Reasonable prices. We like the fajitas, smothered burritos. Rice and beans are a bit bland. - Great chips and salsa - Good service - very prompt and pretty standard (I've only heard one rude interchange between two servers that was a bit unsettling). - Ideal for crowds, families - never a wait, loud enough so you can bring kids here without feeling like you're ruining the whole restaurant's experience I'm from central California and can never find Mexican like we have there - yet somehow we keep coming back here. Perhaps I've resigned myself to the Utah version of Mexican food, and in that, Tres Hombres does it well.

The food was as good as always. Just your average Mexican fare. I got a dish called the Mexicano. I can be quite inattentive at times, & as a result I got something with egg. I don't really care for egg, but the spicy chorizo inside more than made up for it. The fried potatoes on the side were eh. The Bloody Mary was slightly watery & came with one measly olive & a sad, limp piece of asparagus dangling over the rim of the glass. A good heaping of salt & pepper made the drink palatable. The service was mediocre & slow. We were told we would have our drinks @ 11:30 due to arcane Utah laws. We didn't receive our drinks until nearly noon. To be fair though, we were a large party of 15 that came in right as they opened. We will be back to give it another try. P. S. The 3 stars is for the food & relaxing tropical atmosphere.

The service here was really great! Our waitress was fantastic! The chips and salsa are absolutely delicious. Portions are really big! The pork was not my favorite. Personally I prefer cafe rios pork but it was still pretty good. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Mexican food :)

It was a Saturday night, and my sister and I were starving to death. All we'd eaten so far was a Jimmy John's veggie sub at like 11 a.m. Our blood sugar was low, we were tired, and we needed food pronto. The original plan was to find a Taco Bell in the area. Since age 10, I have always gotten the beef Meximelt and Soft Taco Supreme, while my sister favors the Pintos and Cheese. Sometimes for an added treat, I add a nachos and a caramel apple empanada to my order. But as we drove down Highland with no TB in sight, and with NO appetite for a greasy Crown Burger, we saw Tres Hombres. "Hmmm," I said to my sister. "TU QUIERES?" "SÃ sÃ," she answered. I have passed Tres Hombres approximately 3,498 times in my life, but I have never eaten there until tonight. Remember when the Tres Hombres puppets on top of the building would sway back and forth, beckoning you to come and try a horchata? Well, now the puppets are broken. But my desire to eat at Tres Hombres has remained. And boy, am I glad we took a chance and went in. We were seated immediately by a pleasant server who laughed at our jokes throughout the meal. This is a big plus in my book because no one seems to appreciate our sense of humor. Was she fake-laughing? I'll never know, and I don't care, because in the end, her yucking it up with us showed fine attention to detail and excellent customer service. I ordered the enchiladas suizas special and my sister ordered some red sauce combo platter. This restaurant has lightning-fast service--we couldn't believe it when like 5 minutes after ordering we were shoveling enchiladas down our throats. We did everything but lick the platter clean, the food was so tasty. Next time I want to try the flan; I couldn't order it because I had to save room for a caramel cashew concrete from Nielsen's. Why the concrete has whole cashews in it, I'll never know. Seems a little odd that they don't chop them up or anything. We drove home in 1.5 hours of traffic with our seats almost fully reclined to accommodate our distended stomachs. It's a wonder my sister didn't crash the car.

Came here for dinner on a Saturday night, there was about a 15 min wait, and me and my two friends grabbed a beer at the bar. In true Salt Lake fashion, we had to close our tab to move to a table, but the bartender and the host were both very helpful in expediting this experience. This is a great place for Americanized Mexican food, exactly what I was wanting (Truly a hard find in my home of NYC). As everyone says, their chips and salsa are addictive, served warm and the salsa is very fresh, but not spicy at all. We ordered the Pork Flautas as a starter. It was pretty basic, but good. Served with a large helping of guac and sour cream. Good portion for three people. My friends ordered the fajitas to share. It was a HUGE portion, great for two. Good price. They were both very happy with it. I ordered the Crane Asada burrito and it was delish. The mole had a deep flavor, very addictive. It was surly more then any single person should eat, but I kept feeling the need for 'just one more bite'. I was left stuffed more then the burrito was! I would go back and order this in a heart beat. The decor is cheesy mexican inspired, and the booths are very soft, almost uncomfortable, but again, I would sit there to eat that burrito without a second thought. Yum!

I like this place! I don't know why everyone else had such bad experiences, but maybe it's because they went too fancy. Don't go fancy, just get the basics. The serving sizes at huge, so if you are looking for a bang for your buck, come here. Unlike other Mexican restaurants in town there is No 2 hour wait, you can hear your neighbors speak, you're not rubbing elbows or having complete strangers breathe on your meal because they're sitting so close, it's nice. I'd definitely go again.

I was craving Mexican food and decided to try this place since I'm cool on the greasy food poisoning average Beto stands. Decided to get the Chimichanga Del Mar which is a fried burrito w fish and shrimp. I got mine enchilada style w red sauce. I wasn't impressed with them at all the retried beans was canned and the rice tasted like it was from a box. The burrito was ok. Nothing about this food tasted like authentic Mexican. I asked for sopes and they don't carry them. What kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't carry sopes?? The restaurant was nice and real plants everywhere friendly customer service. Just not a place I will be recommending to anyone nor will I be coming back.

Um, not the best Mexican I've had. Not even close. The chips and salsa were delicious but the food was bad. That's really unfortunate.

This isn't the worst Mexican food you'll ever have, but it's certainly not the best either. I had the tres enchiladas, which is a plate with 3 of tres hombres' upscale enchiladas. When the food was brought out all 3 enchiladas were so close together that all of the flavors totally ran together - defeating the purpose of the dish in my opinion - and to top it off, no pun intended, there was a HUGE dollop of sour cream bridging all 3 enchiladas. This is one of the most expensive menu items and I kind of expected that a little more care would have been taken in plating the food. The taste of the food was OK, but really nothing special especially for $16.99! The service we got really wasn't worth writing home about either. Our server only came to our table 3-4 times even though the place wasn't very busy, she forgot to bring us drinks we ordered, and just wasn't that pleasant to deal with. If you want Mexican food, there are much better places in the valley both in terms of price, and quality.

Food was decent, but neither me nor my wife thought it was anywhere near worthy of being more expensive than Red Iguana. Chips and salsa were good. Probably won't go back.

We went in excited to finally try Tres Hombres after hearing good things from friends in the past. The decor is really great, open and tropical feeling with all the plants. Very warm and inviting. However, all the decor cannot make up for the poor quality of the food. I had a grilled veggie burrito, that had so much tomatillo sauce on it, it was soggy and gross. I ended up scooping the vegetable out of the inside and trying to eat them, but they were super greasy. They also came with a side of refried beans, which I ate, but the inside of the burrito was also stuffed with the same refried beans with the greasy veggies. I ended up munching on chips, salsa, and guacamole and not eating the burrito. My friend had a veggie tostada that he said was way too spicy and his veggies were also super greasy. Our waitress was also very slow and we had to ask for drink refills and more chips. Good customer service, you don't have to ask, they ask you. Very disappointing experience. We won't be going back.

Our favorite place to eat. Everything on their menu is fabulous. The cost is well worth it.

I went on my first date with my husband here, so it has some sentimental value, but I still don't ever want to return! The food isn't great and it is SO overpriced for how completely below-average it tastes. There is a very long list of Mexican restaurants I've tried that taste much better than Tres Hombres (and have better prices too!). Hell, I'll take a $1 delicious street taco over this place any day.

Nice relaxed atmosphere. Chips and salsa are better than most Mexican restaurants. Most items on the menu are fair at best. If i ever go back, i will NOT order any deserts. Mine came with unwanted hair. When I complained, there were no apologies and they tried to imply that i placed it in the food.

Tres Hombres Mexican Grill and Cantina: Four Stars, and not because of the Food! Here is the thing about Tres Hombres, the food is GOOD, not amazing, but GOOD every time. That's rare in any restaurant these days. I can't say that about anything I have ever reviewed on Yelp, ever. This place has a classic family friendly US style Mexican menu that has something for everyone. But the great thing is that if you find something you like one time, it will be just as good the next time you go there. Also, in the 12+ times I have been there, the service is always great no matter how busy they are. Every server has been good, with a few standouts - I wont mention their names but they are an older Latin gentleman and a young blonde woman. A few standout items can be found on their specialty drink menu. Try some of their stronger specialty margaritas on the back page of the menu, and drink responsibly because some of them are powerful.

Food was terrible, the quality was worse than del taco. I barely choked down 1/4 of the burrito grande before my taste buds jumped out of my mouth and ran for the border. The kids menu was non existent so we ordered a soft taco for my child. The taco was $8! Ridiculous! The prices suck, the food sucks, the waiter sucked! I will never come back!

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake. The service is good and fast with best chips and salsa. It is your typical Mexican restaurant fare. We love the cheese enchiladas or the combo plate with a taco and enchilada. Their chili verde is good too. Highly recommend. If you go, ask for Nando as your server. He is the best!

I'm going back and forth between two and three stars for this review. I'm with Charles S on this one. His review is pretty spot on with my thoughts. The complimentary chips and salsa were decent. I like the light crunchy chips especially because they're served warm but the salsa is just okay. No heat at all and no other options to get anything spicier. The prices are a bit crazy. I get that they're not La Frontera or any of the other less expensive places. I know that it's a nicer place with better ambiance. But when most of your plates start at $13-14, I'm expecting really great food. Instead, what you get is kind of...meh. It's not awful by any means. It's just not great. But at least you get big portions? I'd trade that in for more flavor. I wanted to try the Tres Enchiladas plate but $17 for three enchiladas is absolutely ridiculous even if it comes with rice and beans. They have a nice selection of alcohol and cocktails. I've tried a couple of different drinks and they have nice flavor but lack the booziness I want. I know that's not really their fault but the drinks aren't really worth it if there's no buzz accompanying it. I settled on three stars because of the service. I've had good service there and that's always something to look forward to.

I love pretty close to this place and every time I go I feel like I spent a bunch money and just got full. With price averaging around $16 and a cost for simple substitutions, not additions to the meal, I feel like the food is not that authentic. The portions are huge, I never leave without leftovers, which is good, but not quite worth the price. Our service this visit was quite bad.. Didn't know the specials, it seemed like she just started, but I feel like she's been there a while. When we finished she kept asking for our payment (we didn't even know she was gonna be the cashier) then kept interrupting us to take things off our table. Finally even told us she was trying to get out of here and we were her reasoning of not being able to leave. I really don't know why I keep going back to this place, never had a to die for meal, or great service. I bet I go almost once a year and I don't ever recommend this place to people either.. I would actually do 2 stars on service and 3 stars on food.

I love this place. Busy or not the food is pretty great. I'm sad it only has a 3 star rating! The decor is so wonderful with all the trees and plants inside it makes me feel like I'm in a jungle. Very clean. And original. Try the fish tacos!

If anyone is looking for a new Mexican restaurant to try, avoid Tres Hombres! Not only was the food terrible but the management was even worse. They had no idea what they were talking about when it came to the "liquor'' laws of Utah. My friend and I were not able to have more than two drinks after purchasing our appetizer. The server threw away my ID on accident and denied it. Later, one of the employees ended up letting me know that they had thrown it away and just couldn't find it. To avoid unwanted conflict, they played dumb over the situation. Being a restaurant manager myself, the treatment of the manager toward new customers was absolutely appauling and along with being lied to, cut off after two drinks, and food was only mediocre, I recommend staying away from this joint.

Sometimes, my friends can be stupid. Case in point, this place that they kept insisting on trying to drag me to. Sure, it's been around for a while and went through a few renovations and my visits were before and after one of them, but I just don't "get" this place, not the appeal, not the draw, not anything. From the moment, I walked in the door, I was assaulted with faux Mexicano bric-a-brac and a pseudo-Latino color scheme. I started to get the idea what I was in for pretty quickly after seeing the menu and foolishly tried to drown my newfound sorry in overpriced Mexican beer by way of a nearby grocery store. I needn't have bothered, but quickly found my mistake fast enough to order what one of my palate-free friends suggested. So, error after error on that visit. Most of what was delivered to me in some combo plate or other was inedible. A couple years or so went by, with me either refusing this place or making gagging noises if someone mentioned the name in my presence and a different friend told me she'd heard great things about it. I told her of my less than glorious experience and she said the place was re-done. Somehow I allowed myself to be persuaded. Evidently at the time I was badly in need of having my head examined. This time I got a little rangy and decided to go full-on exotic and ordered swordfish tacos. These gorgeous bits of fish came drowning (I realize the inherent contradiction there, yes) in this nasty, nasty white sauce that essentially wrecked what was there. The table hot sauce for dipping chips was moderately better than the time before, but not so that I wanted to ever give them any more of my money and so, I never have. I wouldn't say this place rates an avoid, but I'm hard-pressed to think of a time I would ever willing set foot in it again. Maybe a business lunch or something...I understand they have margaritas now...might be enough to squeak by.

Went to the place on Saturday afternoon around 2PM, 31st August. Greeted and seated, got water, the cups were dirty, the silverware had food on it. Never got served, walked out, not sure if I will go back.

Food was good, but not the best. Chips and salsa were excellent. The service was pretty slow. My father-in-law had to wander around to find our own pitcher of water to just fill them ourselves. The chimichaga was pretty good.

I can't figure out why people go to this place. I went for a work event and had heard it was awesome. I think we were all less than pleasantly surprised. There was one waiter for seriously the entire restaurant. He took forever to take and deliver our orders, and we never saw him after that until he delivered our checks. Nobody got drinks refilled, nobody got napkins or anything. Which wouldn't have been such a problem if our food was good. My meal came with flour tortillas that could be mistaken in a blind taste test for shoe leather. Most of us in the group were seriously underwhelmed with our food. Don't get me wrong I am never against some cheap Mexican it's just that when our bills came to be $20-30 per meal it kind of seemed like a huge joke. I wish it was. I don't see this place staying much longer.

There are so many dishes I love at Tres Hombres, I don't even know where to start! Their specials are always awesome, to name a few: the sweet pork, crab flautas (yum!!), the pozole is excellent... The regular menu items - the shrimp cocktail is to die for! I would have never tried it myself, a friend turned me on to it, it's not your regular shrimp cocktail, that's for sure. I could put the sauce from that on EVERYTHING! I'm not a taquitos fan, but I tried the shredded beef from another friend's plate, and I'll tell you - I'm a convert.. their zacateca, the mole, pork carnitas, all excellent! hubby almost always gets the carne asada. Never fails him. The Tres leche, Mmm. When you've been around for as long as this place has, you're definitely doing something right!

I'm watching my carbs yet again because I am looking a bit sumo like. The problem is that I love Mexican food and usually its packed with insulin spiking puffy carbo death. What a surprise my super cute awesome server offered me the pork salad and suggested I use salsa for dressing. It was so good! In face I've had it 2x this week and I feel lean and happy. Love it!

This place is so friendly and it is not just because they asked to see my id when I ordered a drink and I am 43 years old.....no not that at all! I love their shredded beef quesadilla and the portion is so large that two people can share it. I also really enjoyed the Tequilla ice tea but you can only have one or else! I will keep coming back here because it is excellent and right next door to my work, Madison McCord Interiors. Come and check us both out and make an afternoon out of it!

Great location and terrific margarita options. Love the chips & salsa here, and there are lots of choices. It is "Americanized" Mexican food, which means my kids really like to go here. They love the taquitos!

I never write reviews for restaurants, but I found it necessary to do so for this one. My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant 1-2 times per week for about 8 months (with out exaggeration). She likes it there for their enchilada azules, which she orders every single time. I however eat there but have never liked the food, as neither the rest of my family do as well. We went today because my wife wanted her usual but the rest of the family had eaten so we took the kids 2 bags of chips to munch on while she ate. The manager at the end of the time we were there came over to inform us we couldn't take any food in. now i think that is reasonable if we brought in a full course meal from another joint but that was not the case here, she as well as the owner are rude, nasty and not good to their customers. For that i will never go back and they can lose my $2400ish a year because of their attitudes and smart behavior. I will not patronize a restaurant that treats their customers that way. It's too bad because they've just remodeled, but no amount of remodeling can over come smart attitudes, rude behavior and mediocre food!

I like Tres Hombres. They serve gargantuan portions of Americanized Mexican cuisine. I've been a handful of times over the many years they have been in business, and I have always left stuffed and happy. Their chili verde has a great flavor with just the right amount of heat. The meat in their tacos could use a bit more seasoning, but they are still pretty good. The chimichanga is a meaty, deep fried success. But the chili rellenos are no different than you would find at any typical strip mall Mexican restaurant, meaning they are a soggy, cheesy disappointment. Slightly above average chips and salsa. They have an extensive and great tasting specialty drink list, and a wide variety of quality Tequilas for shots or for sipping. I had a great time one Sunday, getting really drunk on well-made, three dollar Bloody Mary's and snarfing down a perfectly acceptable Huevos Rancheros. I find the interior to be very festive and welcoming. In fact, I think Tres Hombres has the best atmosphere of any Mexican restaurant in the valley (except Frida Bistro, which is in a class by itself). Those giant, beautiful plants throughout the place are all real, and I love the kitschy artwork. Look, this is not the real deal. There are no house-made moles or whole fried Tilapia. You have to go much further west of this establishment to find authentic Mexican food. But I'll put on the feedbag at Tres Hombres now and then, and I won't feel bad about it.

In another attempt to get away from my bias for Asian foods, my boyfriend and I came here as he had a craving for Mexican. I had just finished watching a recipe for a mahi mahi ceviche and found myself craving seafood and citrus. My boyfriend got the carne asada burrito and I got the seafood taco salad with mahi mahi, along with a couple of margaritas. The drinks here are a little pricey, but I will admit that they are huge compared to getting margaritas at other places, so I suppose it's justified. I could also say the same thing about the prices on their menu, which are also a little inflated, but I was very glad to see that my salad and his burrito had tons of guacamole (3 avocados worth, I swear!), just how I like it. The flavor itself of my food was nothing special, but it wasn't anything bad, just a little under seasoned. The quality of the ingredients were fine, although I did have a hard time finding any lettuce in my salad haha. My boyfriend's burrito had TONS of steak in it, which was a plus, and after trying some, I think I would have preferred his dish. The chips and salsa were good, except I think I would have preferred a spicier salsa, but it did have a good tomato flavor. Overall, it was a ton of money for a ton of food, but I don't know if I'd be back again because there are so many more affordable and better tasting options. I will say that their service is worthy of 4 stars, as is the location and the ambiance.

My wife has an affinity for this place for some reason and sometimes I'm just too tired to put up a fight so I walk in with my head hanging low! I think all the other 1 and 2 star reviewers have said it as well as I can, so any future reviewers who are giving it 4 or 5 stars please list what you had so maybe I can give it a try. I'm sure against all my protests I'll be dragged back here again, and would be happy to update my review if I stumble upon something good. I'll admit the service is usually 4 star and the place is clean and fairly cool.

Tres Hombres is to Salt Lake Mexican food what Pagoda is to local "Japanese": an outdated, highly-Americanized version of some trace of an ethnic cuisine. The one and only time I ate at Pagoda (hoping for an explanation as to why this type of place has stayed in business for 40 years), I was almost offended at how their hackneyed, circa 1965 take on vaguely Asian flavors had survived the advance of modern civilization. Ditto, Tres Hombres. I didn't expect much, to be frank. I'd been told to avoid this restaurant dozens of times, and have managed to do so easily all 34 years of my on-again/off-again Salt Lake City existence. But a partner who works down the street picked our lunch location, and I once again figured there must be a reason for Tres Hombres' longevity. I'll give you that reason, as best as I can fathom: if Utah suburbanites aren't eating at Chili's, they'd darn well better be able to get a plate of something equally bland and ultra-familiar down the street... ...like a sour cream-smothered chimichanga. I'm sure for some, Tres Hombres' rendition brings warm memories of Lynn Wilson's flooding back in salty tears, it's so lacking in spice or any semblance of authenticity. I made the even sillier mistake of ordering an enchilada brimming with seafood. The shrimp seemed obviously boiled and the crab straight from a can. All of it was smothered in a flavorless cheese and Sysco-ish red sauce, aside standard riceandbeans and that ridiculous pile of shredded iceberg lettuce. I wish I'd at least tried a margarita first. Tres Hombres gets one extra star because its interior is kitchy old-school Mexican in a good way. There are well-worn Equipale chairs in the lobby, and the dining room is lush with tropical plants in clay pots that form a canopy over all-booth seating. A bar off to one side glows neon and Corona features prominently on colorful signs throughout. I suppose, if that's what you picture when you imagine a meal in Mexico, the food at this place fits. But I highly recommend you get back in your time machine and join the rest of us in this century. There are dozens of better places in town. Try mole or a little serrano with your grilled chicken. Or better yet, visit Mexico. It looks and tastes nothing like Tres Hombres.

If I could, I would eat at Tres Hombres a couple of times a week...at LEAST a couple of times a week. Friendly staff and great service compliment the GREAT food. I try to have something different each visit and have yet to be disappointed in my meal. The servings are bountiful and the chips and salsa will keep coming for as long as you request them. And don't forget to have a Margarita...they have several, SEVERAL different kinds.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

(3)Aimee C.
This is the worst Mexican restaurant. Super pricey for the food quality. The only thing worth mention are the chips and the fried ice cream, other than that the food is gross. The restaurant does not look clean nor do the silverwear. It was a great waste of my money and time. I'm never going back to that horrible place.
(1)Jeff M.
(2)Sean J.

Classy.
(2)Geni C.
The food was absolutely horrible. Bland and everything tasted the same. Think school cafeteria. The super premium margaritas were watery and tasteless.
(2)Paige B.
Machaca burrito, Pomarita and a side of mole! The three homies never disappoints!
(3)Calvin S.
Never been super impressed with this place. The decor inside is kinda nice I guess since they have expanded over the years. The food is kinda bland and over priced. I do like that they have a guy go around with a guitar usually on weekends, but he does get pushy for you to buy his album. It's like, really, do I want to buy an album of some struggling Spanish guitarist?

well, the chicken soft taco had zero flavor, i mean zero. i tried the beef taco and I was thinking I was at taco bell. Dont waste your time or money. The service was good.

(5)Brian A.
Chips and salsa are very good. Everything else we have had has been alright. Chili relleno was not good at all.

if you're a fan of quantity over quality, i highly recommend tres hombres. however, for those of you seeking traditional mexican fare and portions you can finish in one meal and not feel bad about yourself for, i suggest you keep looking. the prices are a bit high, but to be fair, the portion are ENORMOUS. as in, each plate could easily be shared by 3 people with food to spare. not particularly the freshest mex i've ever tasted, nor the most flavorful, but not awful. if you're with a large group and have a lot of mouths to feed, this might be the right place for you. service is fine, and the restaurant is clean and kitschy - nothing horribly wrong, but nothing all too great either.
(2)Andrew D.
(3)Natalya R.
(2)Lorrie K.
My favorite Mexican place in Utah. I guess it's mostly the margaritas but I like the mixture of fish and seafood they have added with the traditional items. Not the most authentic Mexican food (that would be the Red Iguana) but a fun and delicious place on the east bench.
(5)Brian C.
Tres Hombres is a great lunch destination. It has a really good lunch menu and the service is very prompt. They charge you for extra chips - $0.99 will appear on your ticket. They have a very nice swordfish dish on the menu - its a must try.
(4)Elisabeth B.
(2)Darin T.
(2)Joy B.
(1)Troy T.
Staff was great, food was not. Relleno was inedible...no joke... and I can choke down about anything, cheese in the enchiladas wasn't melted and the chips tasted like the fryer grease needed to be changed. If I'm forced to go again I'll try the carnitas I guess.
(1)Jennifer S.
Food was okay. It took a long time to get a waiter n to get my order n he hardly checked on me. I think there is only 2 waiters for the whole place.
(3)Rick B.
Great quality consistent food. The chips and salsa are the best in the valley!!!! My wife and I come here all the time and we live on the other side of the valley. This is my favorite Mexican place
(5)Mathew A.

(2)Scott H.
(1)Chris B.

(3)S H.
Salsa is good, food is so so. We get the salsa to go and get food someplace else. So the stars are for the salsa!
(2)Shannon P.
Such a fun place. Awesome margaritas and the best chips and guacamole in town. Service is awesome!
(4)Tony P.
This place has a great interior with delicious fajitas and a fun drink menu. I will be back.

(4)Shelbie S.
(2)Jana A.
(5)Vida A.
(3)Katie P.
Food? Meh Uninspiring The salsa is the number one go to salsa for anyone with a cold. My husband always picks some up and swears it helps his colds. Lol
(3)Kelsey C.
(3)Matt N.
Great service great food! Come with a group of friends and enjoy. Get the combo plate and take whatever you can't eat home.
(5)Dave B.
(3)Alexis H.

Yum!
(4)Carla B.
(4)Tammy J.
(1)R C.
expensive for food quality I had good service atmosphere nice very average food
(2)Scott P.
Great menu and atmosphere, best tasting Mexican food in this area. The service was very friendly.
(5)Dre S.
Um, not the best Mexican I've had. Not even close. The chips and salsa were delicious but the food was bad. That's really unfortunate.
(1)Andrew S.

Quality of the food beats the local competition IMHO. Service for lunch is always superb.

Love it!
(4)Marsha H.

Best tacos EVER - seriously swordfish tacos... go eat 'em
(4)Cindy P.
Food was yummy. May not be the most authentic but still very delicious, good portions and not a huge wait - always a plus for us. Place was clean, atmosphere is great and staff was friendly. All over a nice place. Prices a little high but will def go again. Location is convenient.
